3rd-4th, though easily modifiable for other grades
Time Frame:
1 class period per review
Summary:
Students will plan and record game reviews to pique their interest, develop an understanding of the process, and teach the tech skills. Once comfortable with the review genre, process and tech skills, students will transition into writing book reviews. The goal is to pull in reluctant and immature writers while simultaneously encouraging the development of "voice."
Tasks:
Introduce the project
Listen to a few sample reviews done by older students, students from previous years, or the teacher
Discuss a beginning game review format
Introduction and name of game
3 aspects of the game they liked
1 aspect they would change or add to improve or customize the game
Closing
Plan review (could easily be done in pairs and might be stronger that way due to the built in editing of ideas and the dynamic of two reviewers) - Games could be computer, console, iPad, iPod touch, sports, gym, board games, etc.
Practice
Record - (AudioBoo, Cinch, GarageBand on Mac, Audacity on PC)
Upload - (AudioBoo, Cinch, Wiki, Blog, etc.)
Sharing in class, discussion, examining what makes a "good" review
Repeat for a second game
Optional - Math Games
Discuss what elements might go into a math game review
Repeat above process for a math game
Revisit how a math game review might need to be different and what makes a "good" math game review
Review a second or third math game
Optional - Look at screencast reviews? - May require a different tool(s) and way of posting
Repeat process for short movie or book reviews
